Elmer Joe “Horsefly” Swaffar, born August 15 th , 1932, passed away at the age of 92, on Friday, May 2, 2025. He was the son of Elmer Pascal Swaffar and Thelma Trawick Swaffar, of Conway. Elmer Joe attended Conway High School. Elmer Joe was employed by the Arkansas Forestry Commission where he retired after 30 years of service. Elmer Joe spent his free time trading and selling horses at the local sale barn.

From a young age he could be found jumping on and off every horse up for sale at the barn; and received his nickname of “Horsefly” or “Fly” for short. He continued to buy and sell land and livestock throughout his entire life; always looking for next sale. He served in the Army as military police and was called for active duty during the Korean War, serving in Tango and Buson Korea from 1953-1955.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, W.C. Swaffar and Eddie Linn Swaffar. He is survived by his life partner, Grace Kelley, his daughter Sherry Swaffar of Conway, son Todd Swaffar (Sophia) of Conway, Grandson Jacob Mauterstock (Samantha) of Conway and two great-grandchildren Keelee Smith (Colby) and Kendall Mauterstock.

Visitation will be from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 20, 2025 at the Conway Cowboy Church, with the Memorial Service following at 6:30 p.m., Pastor Shane Dickson officiating the service.

Memorials may be made to Conway Cowboy Church.
