July 4, 1951 — December 15, 2023

Maumelle, Arkansas

Gary C. Barger, M.D., 72, of Maumelle, Arkansas, passed away on Friday, December 15, 2023. He was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, on July 4, 1951, to John Barger and Louise Outler Barger. Gary grew up in Benton, Arkansas, but moved to Bryant, Arkansas, as a teenager and graduated from Bryant High School in 1969. He attended the University of Arkansas Fayetteville and graduated from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 1976.
From the time he was a boy, Gary wanted to be a doctor. Gary was one of the founders of Market Place Medical Clinic in Little Rock, where he practiced family medicine until his retirement. He cared deeply for his patients, and he was grateful for the trust they placed in him.
Gary was an avid boater. Whether it was boating on a lake, on a river, or cruising the ocean, he was at home on the water. He and Coleen personally explored the majority of the navigable waterways in the eastern half of the USA on their boat, Calypso Poet, and they completed the Great Loop twice.
Gary died following a nine-month-long battle with a rare cancer, gall bladder carcinoma with metastasis to his bone marrow.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Coleen Barger; son, Jonathan Barger (Katarzyna), of Naperville, Illinois; grandchildren, Sofia Barger and Dominik Barger, of Naperville, Illinois; sister, Nancy Barger Cowart (Charles) of Little Rock; niece, Lauren Cowart Landers and great-niece, Addison Landers of Little Rock.
His final resting place will be at Riverwood Memorial Gardens in Maumelle, Arkansas, following a private ceremony. The family is hosting a Celebration of Life memorial at Chenal Event Venue, 21 Rahling Circle, Little Rock, Arkansas, from 2-6 p.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2024, and all family and friends are warmly invited to attend.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family would appreciate donations made in his memory to the Arkansas Hospice Foundation, arkansashospice.org, or the BoatUS Foundation, www.boatus.org.
