James Isaac “Jim” Penrod, 85, of Maumelle, Arkansas, passed away on December 19, 2025, at The Springs of Fairfield Bay, surrounded by the care and compassion of his family, friends, and caregivers.

Jim was born on March 30, 1940, in Dennard, Arkansas, to Isaac and Sarah (McGee) Penrod. He grew up in Dennard, with several cherished childhood years in Kansas City, Kansas. He carried throughout his life the values his parents instilled in him—hard work, curiosity, and kindness. A lifelong learner and the first in his family to earn a college degree, Jim graduated from Clinton High School, proudly served in the United States Air Force, and went on to receive a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Harding University, a Master’s in Biostatistics from Tulane University, and a Doctorate in Institutional Management from Pepperdine University.

He began his civilian career contributing to the NASA project that put the first man on the moon, an accomplishment he always treasured. He later became a pioneer in higher education technology and was among the first dozen Chief Information Officers appointed in a university setting. He served in CIO roles at Pepperdine University, the University of Maryland at Baltimore, California State University Los Angeles, and the University of Memphis. He authored more than 50 publications and spoke nationally, helping shape a field that continues to grow today.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Laverta; his wives, Jeraldean and Ann; his son‑in‑law, Steve; and his granddaughter, Mari Hall. He is survived by his sister, Marolyn Dorman (Wendell); his children, Mike Penrod (Jan) and Rita Hall; his stepdaughter, Elizabeth Bales (Jim); and his second wife and friend, Leecia. He leaves behind grandchildren Jimmy (Taylor), Jonathan (Allyson), Brittany, Brandy, Lucy (Lynn), and step‑grandchildren Hana (Zack), Charles, and Seraph; great‑grandchildren Asa, Flora, Lucas, Maddox, Owen, Henry, Lexi, Spencer, Aiden, and Alex; great‑great‑grandchild Grayson; and step great‑grandchildren Valerie, Edward, and Zoey. Each brought him joy, pride, and love throughout his life.

In retirement, Jim devoted himself to volunteer service, often stepping into leadership roles and offering his steady hand and thoughtful guidance wherever it was needed. Jim will be remembered for his wisdom, kindness, strength, and the love he shared freely with family, friends, and colleagues. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched.
