Melvin Walker was born in Plum Bayou, Arkansas on May 13, 1946, in his grandparents’ home. He departed this life on April 22, 2025. Melvin was preceded in death by his beloved parents, his mother Florean Dillard and bonus father Curtis Dillard, as well as his siblings, Arthur Lee Culclagers, Calvin Dillard, Eric Clayton, Peggy Ann Dillard, and Wanda Faye Harris.
Melvin was raised by his grandparents Columbus and Cora Crumpton and worked hard as a child on the family farm in Sherrill, Arkansas until the age of 17. He attended Sherrill Rosenwald School and Martin High School. Melvin loved spending time fishing and hunting and throwing knives. He was famously known in the area for his knife throwing skills as “Walker, the knife man”.
He began his employment in Pine Bluff, Arkansas with Varco Steel and Sunbelt Railroad and later worked with Brown Packaging Company. In the late 1970’s, Melvin relocated to Little Rock, Arkansas where he met and married Catherine Colbert. Melvin was known to be a kind-hearted and giving person. In his later years, Melvin enjoyed spending time sharing laughter with family and friends, hanging out under a shade tree playing dominoes, telling jokes, and talking trash.
He is survived by his devoted daughter Angela Walker and his three sons, Melvin Ray Walker, Melvin James Mayweather, and Joseph Bernard Mayweather. His surviving siblings include his brother Cuncy Dillard and his six sisters: Nadine Moore, Margaret Hendrix, Elmyra Medlock, Ella Vaughn, Carolyn Dillard, and Betty (Kenneth) Harris. In addition, Melvin leaves behind a host of other relatives and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
