Virginia Anne Sayger

Virginia Anne Sayger, 82, of Hernando, Mississippi went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, June 18, 2026. She was born on January 14, 1944, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, to James and Goldie Higdon.

Virginia lived a life defined by faith, joy, and love. She loved to laugh, and her beautiful smile reflected the genuine joy that was so much a part of who she was. She had a gift for making people feel welcome and cared for. Kindness came naturally to her, and she loved people unconditionally. Love was her default, and her family, friends, and even strangers were blessed by it.

Her faith in Jesus Christ was the foundation of her life. Raised in church from infancy, she gave her life to Christ at age 10, remained devoted to Him throughout her life, and happily shared the hope she had found in Him with others.

One of Virginia's greatest passions was serving the deaf community. As a young girl attending a church service in Tulsa, Oklahoma, she watched a woman interpret in sign language and became fascinated. In 1964, a deaf neighbor taught her to sign, and for nearly 60 years, she faithfully served as a church interpreter and treasured her relationships within the deaf community. What began as a childhood fascination became a lifelong calling.

Virginia was also a gifted singer who spent many years singing in church choirs and teaching voice lessons. She loved helping others discover and develop their talents. She also had a well-known love of jewelry, and she delighted in helping others find pieces they loved. Friends and family knew that Virginia was rarely, if ever, seen without her favorite earrings and rings.

The love story at the center of Virginia's life was her marriage to Sam Sayger. They met in 1958 and were married on June 16, 1959. Just two days before her passing, they celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary. Their marriage was built on love, faith, commitment, and perseverance. Through every season of life, they remained devoted to one another. Their enduring love was an inspiration to everyone who knew them, and only death could separate them.

Virginia's greatest pride and blessing was her family. She was the loving mother of John Sayger, Rick Sayger, and Annette Sayger (Avery). In 1979, she and Sam opened their hearts and home to Steve, adopting him at age sixteen and completing their family of six. To Virginia, family was never defined merely by biology, but by love, and she poured that love generously into each of her children.

Her hands are still, her voice is silent, and her work is finished. But her legacy of love and faith will continue for generations to come.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at Colonial Hills Church Hernando Campus, 1225 Monteith Avenue, Hernando, Mississippi. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service. In honor of Virginia's bright spirit and joyful life, guests are invited to wear bright colors. We would like to welcome the deaf community to attend the service and an interpreter will be present.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in Virginia's honor to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes ministry of her son, John Sayger, a ministry she faithfully loved, supported, and prayed for.
