Charles Suphan

June 25, 1948 — August 9, 2022

Little Rock

It is with tremendous sadness that the family of Charles Vincent Suphan must announce his passing. Charles passed away August 9, 2022, at Baptist Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas. Charles leaves behind two children, Alicia Suphan, and Jesse Suphan; five grandchildren; his brother, William Suphan; his sister, Clara Wright-Sloan; and his ex-wife, Neema Suphan.

He is preceded in death by his parents William Suphan (Fireman) and Ruth Suphan (Nurse); his daughter, Charlene Suphan; and his older brothers, Donald Boyer and James Boyer.

Charles was born in Brooklyn, NY June 25, 1948. He grew up back and forth between Arkansas and New York. Charles had a big personality and led an even bigger life. He would often regale his kids with stories from his youth of traveling the country, the friends he met, and the trouble he got into. And there was a lot of trouble.

Charles held many careers including but not limited to deep sea fisherman, carpenter, line cook, mill worker, unemployment hearing judge, and lastly attorney.

Charles graduated from Berkshire Community College in Pittsfield, MA. He then went on to get his B.A. in Political Science at Amherst College, Amherst, MA class of 1986. He returned to Arkansas to study law at University of Arkansas at Little Rock School of Law and graduated in 1989. Charles passed his bar exam on the first try, which he would remind his kids frequently.

Charles has been an Attorney for over 30 years in Arkansas with a long history of standing up for the little guy. One of his past paralegals quoted him as saying “lives are in the balance here” regularly around the office. He advocated for those who needed a voice through his law practice. He represented clients pro-bono under RAINN- Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization.  Before apps like “23 and me” or “Ancestry,” Charles volunteered his time to help reunite families. Some of his proudest moments were reuniting parents with kids, siblings, and long-lost friends.

Charles’ hobbies included country music and history.  Charles was major fan of Elvis Presly.  On many occasions, he took his kids to Graceland to be in the presence of “The King.”  Charles also held a deep passion for investigating US history, especially the JFK assassination. He took his family yearly to Dallas to the grassy knoll to do his own research on the matter.  He did eventually get to the bottom of it, of course.

Charles’ most wonderful traits were his nonjudgmental disposition, gentle demeanor, and high-spirited humor. As a person with “above average intelligence” (he would want this put in), he was able to find the humor in everything. One of his most revered comedy idols was 50s comedian Lenny Bruce. Lenny Bruce once said, “without the human condition there is no struggle, no pain, and also no laughter.” Right now his family is feeling that pain and struggle. However, his family wants to thank him for his gift of laughter that helps bring them some comfort. Lenny Bruce also said, “there are never enough I love you’s,” and nothing is more true today. Charles always ended every phone call saying “I love you” because in case anything happened, those would be the last words he said to you. There are never enough opportunities to say another “I love you”. We love you Charles, and we will take all your lessons to heart and pass them along to those we love.
