Marianne Lockard

December 18, 1941 — November 14, 2020

Little Rock, Arkansas

Marianne Lockard, 78, finished the final chapter of her life on November 14, 2020, after a wicked battle with Alzheimer’s. It would be wrong to say that she lost her battle with the disease because Alzheimer’s is not a war, it’s a horrible one-sided enemy that wreaks havoc on all it affects. Nonetheless, we will always remember her as having a smile on her face and love in her heart. She lived her life to its fullest to the very end. Through her, we know what resilience, love, kindness, and perseverance truly look like.

She was born in Kansas City, Missouri, but lived the bulk of her adult life in Hope, Arkansas before moving to Little Rock in 2016. She was a high school teacher for ten years before realizing her calling to join the Quaker ministry. Marianne was a faithful and beloved member of the Little Rock Friends (Quaker) Meeting. She was a tower of strength and wisdom for Quaker meetings in a four-state area.  She attended the School of the Spirit at Pendle Hill, a Quaker institution for continuing education, led workshops at the Oasis in Little Rock and was a visitor of and spiritual adviser to prisoners in Arkansas and Texas, including Frank Williams, who her family fondly calls their brother from another mother. As a traveling minister, she provided pastoral care to isolated Quakers and small Quaker meetings in Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Marianne’s devotion to her faith and love for all humanity was evident in her life. We take comfort in knowing that her Friends are continuing to hold her in the Light.

Marianne's role as a caregiver throughout her lifetime was a testimony to her love and devotion to family and friends. She would put the needs of others first, always giving from the heart. Her spare time while living in Hope was spent transforming three acres into a colorful oasis of plants, flowers, and feeders for all the local critters. Gardening, for her, was a passion and a lifestyle. Her garden was not limited to the earth. The spiritual seeds she planted in the hearts of all she touched transcend earthly things. These seeds produced fruit that will live forever in memory of her.

Things few people knew about Marianne are that she was a very good synchronized swimmer early in life; she had a group of 10 ladies she graduated high school with who she traveled with every 2 years somewhere in the US for a week of fun and memories - with the most recent being October, 2019; she was valedictorian of her Henderson State University class; she cooked six giant pans of chicken spaghetti and 20 pies to feed homeless or displaced people once a month for years in Hope; she had a car with over 400,000 miles on it; she had a garden/yard that rivaled Martha Stewart at her home in Hope; she loved popcorn, French fries, chocolate and Diet Coke; and she despised making her bed.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Thomas G. Lockard and her parents Janet and Clifford Pilkey. She is survived by her son David Lockard of Hope, her daughter Carol Worley (Lech Matuszewski) of Little Rock, her daughter Shelly Albright (Butch) of Wichita, Kansas, her sister Janet Brack (Leroy) of Dallas, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and her many Friends/friends from across the country.

Her legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of those whose lives she touched in addition to those who felt her spiritual presence. While we don’t know for sure what really happens with death, we are comforted in believing she is back with her husband, parents and Friends/friends who have died before her and is again playing with her adorable and forever spoiled dog of 17 years, Shaka.

In light of the Covid pandemic a celebration of her life will be scheduled at a later time. Her family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Little Rock Friends Meeting, P.O. Box 2680, Conway, AR 72033-2680. We also ask that until we meet again to celebrate her life you all also hold her in the Light and remember the love she had for us all.
